Introduce yourself and tell us what drives you to compete.
Hey my name is Carlen Gardner. I am 21 years old from Paso Robles California. I have been racing for about twelve years and racing professionally for almost four years. What drives me to compete is just growing up around athletic sports. I did everything from football, baseball, soccer, volleyball, go-cart racing, motocross racing and even some non-athletic competition such as band, haha. But growing up doing those activities made me very competitive and I tried to be one of the best in each sport I did. I just happened to love racing dirt bikes more then anything and started to push everything I had into it. Here we are twelve years later still trying to become the best I can possibly be and until that day comes I cannot stop!
Tell us about your team and how it came together.
Team BWR Engines, LTEC, SSI Decals team came from Brian White, owner of BWR, and I coming together and trying to compete in our sport of supercross, racing in the highest level possible! That being said we had to go big if we wanted to make a presence and impact with being a smaller team. So we worked our tails off trying to gather up in a very short amount of time the best sponsors and riders we could find and we did. LTEC (Leo Tidwell Excavating Corporation) and MOTO XPERT were very crucial sponsors who were gracious enough to join our program and give us an amazing semi truck and trailer for the season, which in supercross in a essential key to the puzzle for a team. Also SSI Decals for the amazing wrap they put on our trailer, which gave us a very professional and clean look to provide for our team and sponsors. Then sponsors such as Lazer Star Lights, Bolt Motorcycle Hardware, Mx Athletics, Race Tech, Rekluse Clutch, Pro Circuit, Lucas Oil, Mika Metals, DT1 Filters, Works Connection, AcerbisUSA, Dirt Tricks Sprockets, Moto Seat, Evens Coolant, Tubliss systems, are also HUGE factors for having amazing bikes put on the track running at the best quality they can be.
What is it like racing Supercross? Tell us about your season so far.
Racing supercross to me is like playing NFL for football. It is the pinnacle of our sport and if you can succeed there you are the best in the world. The thought of that gives me chills and drives me to work harder each day. My season has been a stepping stone in the right direction. Each year I tried to progress just enough to be noticeable but not so much to where I get hurt because I rushed it. It is tough because you have to be patient and look where you will be in three or four years. So it has been going to plan and I am happy with my results and riding so far.
What are your race day routines? Like what do you eat on race day?
Race day routines are tough because if you don't do something or forget something it is stuck in your head all day haha. So the biggest thing is actually just trying to stay occupied to keep my mind relaxed before practice and racing. Other than that making sure I am eating and drinking enough during the day to be properly performing. Now as far as what I eat during the day is crucial because you need to try eating stuff you would normally eat on practice days because you don't want to confuse the body. In the morning it is English muffins with peanut butter and honey and a big scoop of eggs with 1 cup of coffee. Around 11:00 I eat a protein bar, then again around 2. After practice around 4 I eat pasta with a gatorade to give me some sugar. Then we go racing at 7 and don't eat till after the main event.
What’s your pump up song?
My Pump up song changes weekly haha. Typically on the drive to the track or the flight to the next round I search Apple music in most popular and find the song for the day. Just so I keep it new and exciting each weekend so I can really get that pump up working, haha.
What are your goals for the rest of the season?
My goals for the rest of the season are to continue progressing and being in the main events with consistent finishes. I have great people in my corner who really believe in me and are helping me with everything I need to succeed. Thank you to all my personal sponsors as well for their continued help over the years getting me to the races. Aimm service group, Hoosier Tire, Hungry to win, Fly Racing, Scott goggles, Gaerne Boots, Mobius Braces, Ogio, My Lucas Oil, Ride Engineering, Scorpion Energy, Crown Limos 805, JBond Insurance, Clear Choice Property Management, KM3, and of course my beautiful girlfriend.
